A police corporal, attached to the Manchester Division, was shot dead Friday evening in Mandeville,
It’s understood that the officer, Corporal Melvin Smith of the Manchester Community Safety and Security Branch, was attempting to foil a robbery when he was shot.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Police Federation, in response, has expressed deep sadness at the is deeply sadden and mourns the “untimely passing of Corporal Smith.”
“He was a well disciplined, jovial, energetic and community-oriented policeman who gave selfless service to the Jamaica Constabulary Force for over nineteen years,” the Federation said in a statement.
“It was only today (Friday) he accompanied our Welfare Director Det/Cons Thomas to visit members in Area 3 who are hospitalized and gave frequent updates to our Chairman Sgt Wilson of these visits. The late Cpl Melvin Smith was a tower of strength to the members of the JCF and the various communities he has served. He is truly one of our ‘UNSUNG HEROES OF THE JCF,'” the statement added.
