A district constable was shot dead during a reported confrontation with police on Wednesday night.
He has been identified as Russhaine Wollaston, assigned to the Services Branch – Property Management and Maintenance Division.
Reports are that at around 10 pm, officers from the Duhaney Park Criminal Investigative Branch were on patrol when they received reports that a group of men were in the vicinity of Davidson Avenue behaving in a manner that aroused suspicion.
Police report that, on their arrival, the lawmen saw three men, including Wollaston, having a discussion and instructed them to put their hands on their head. However, only two of the men complied, while Wollaston refused, according to the police.
It is further reported that while the police searched the other men, DC Wollaston advanced towards one of the officers stating that he is a police.
Wollaston reportedly then held onto his waistband, prompting the officer to grab the district constable’s hand. In response, Wollaston reportedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and pointed the weopon towards the cop.
An illegal firearm was reportedly retrieved from Wollaston and he was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
